What should you take into consideration when relocating to Germany?

  • Do you come from outside Europe? If so, you can enter Germany on a tourist visa and then apply for a ‘Blue Card’. This is a work and stay permit. If you come from an EU country then you do not need a tourist visa. This applies to some other countries as well. Your Eurohome relocation-specialist can advise you about this. If you do need a tourist visa, you should apply for one at the German embassy in your own country and you will need to wait until you receive it before travelling to Germany.
  • Many expats must wait a few weeks for their definitive housing in Germany, and need to stay in a hotel or a rental apartment in the meantime. In order to receive your salary, you will need to obtain a registration number from the municipality where you are staying during that time. You can apply for this registration number at the city hall. You will need to have the hotel or the landlord at the rental place sign a declaration that you are in fact staying there.
  • In Germany, there is a lot of bureaucracy. There are a lot of government regulations that must be strictly followed when applying for permits. Bear in mind that this process can cause delays. Fortunately, our Eurohome relocation-specialists can guide you through this maze of regulations.
  • Living in a big city is always expensive, but living in German cities is less expensive than in Amsterdam or Brussels. Rental houses are more affordable in Germany.
  • In Germany, it is very important to use people’s titles and address them in the proper way. The use of the informal language when addressing strangers is ‘not done’.
  • Germans keep their work and private lives separate. It is not a good idea to ‘break the ice’ by asking personal questions, and the use of humor in work situations is also uncommon. Don’t become informal too quickly with business contacts.
  • Germans love facts, numbers and expertise. You should therefore prepare well for a presentation or a business meeting, confirm appointments and always be on time.
